PowerOasis Transforms the Economics of Power
for Tower Operating Companies

Today, at CommunicAsia 2011 in Singapore, PowerOasis launched its multi-tenant wireless network power management solution for tower operating companies. The turnkey solution reduces power costs, increases site uptime and delivers power related business intelligence and reporting, allowing tower lease contracts to be fulfilled more profitably and with lower risk.

A number of market forces are converging to force mobile network operators to consider divesting their network infrastructure to focus on delivering subscriber value through innovative, differentiated and competitive service offerings. Such forces include increased competition, demand for data services, rural network expansion, regulatory compliance, reducing average revenue per user, global economic slowdown and rising energy costs. The consequence is that profit margins are being squeezed and there’s an increased dependency on unpredictable energy prices. Selling towers to a tower operating company under a leaseback agreement releases cash from the mobile network operator’s balance sheet and places responsibility for operations and maintenance on the tower company, freeing up the mobile network operator to focus on core business activities.

Ivan Harris, Chief Marketing Officer for PowerOasis comments; “About 17% of towers globally are currently owned by tower operating companies, increasing to 25% by 2015 (according to ABI Research). The USA and India have dominated the market to date; however, tower operating company presence in Africa, Asia-Pacific and Latin America is accelerating. An increasing number of tower leasing contracts include the provision of power, which passes the power cost and availability burden onto the tower operating company, which is particularly problematic in markets where there isn’t network-wide access to a reliable electricity grid.”

The PowerOasis solution supports power optimisation, power management and power generation. The power management platform is accessed from the tower operations centre to provide power-related business and operational support. Its inherent flexibility allows any site configuration to be catered for, including single or multi-tenancy, on/off/unreliable grid connection, retrofit or new build, any vendor’s power equipment and any network equipment provider’s BTS and transmission equipment. The solution therefore presents a single, unified, network-wide power management experience regardless of the underlying equipment.

John O’Donohue, Chief Executive Officer for PowerOasis adds; “With fixed and variable costs considered, the average breakeven point for a tower operating company stands at 1.5 tenants per tower. Power is the largest variable cost item in a multi-tenant leased tower - with each additional tenant there is a corresponding increase in power consumption. Our power management solution enables tower operating companies to reduce power costs so that they can lower the breakeven ratio and become profitable sooner. Once profitable, the tower operating company can also maintain a competitive advantage through increased power reliability and more pricing flexibility.”

About PowerOasis

PowerOasis (www.poweroasis.com) is a UK-based company providing wireless network power management solutions for Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), Managed Services Providers (MSPs) and Tower Operating Companies (TOCs) to reduce network power costs, increase site availability and deliver power-related business intelligence.

Network power is a top three operational cost item for MNOs globally and the number one item in markets that lack access to a reliable electricity grid. With energy costs on the rise, average revenue per user falling and infrastructure spend increasing to meet data services and rural network build out demand, there is growing pressure on an MNO’s profitability. Furthermore, as MNOs seek to limit their capital expenditure and their exposure to power costs, the burden is being passed to MSPs and TOCs who must effectively manage power to maximise contract profitability and minimise risk.

PowerOasis’s wireless network power management solutions place power related business intelligence directly into the hands of decision makers to support financial management, managed services delivery and day-to-day operations. Our solutions have demonstrated their ability to manage power in a mixed vendor, multi-tenancy environment, for any site configuration and for existing sites or new site additions.
